Since its opening on September 9, 2009,The metro has evolved to keep pace with the city’s rapid urban expansion, It played an important role in transforming it into a major global centre for business and tourism, and enhancing its position as the city of the future.

Over the past 15 years, the Dubai Metro has witnessed a continuous growth in the number of passengers, reaching about 2.4 billion passengers, according to the Dubai Government Media Office.

Dubai Metro has played an effective role in meeting the requirements of population growth and expansion in the city, and has achieved remarkable success in operational efficiency, punctuality, and adherence to the highest international safety standards.

730 thousand passengers per day

With an average daily ridership of around 730,000 passengers, the Dubai Metro is today the preferred mode of transportation for many residents and visitors.

Dubai Metro maintains an on-time performance rate of 99.7%, and since its inception, Dubai Metro has facilitated 4.3 million trips, covering a distance of 26.8 million kilometres.

Since its opening on September 9, 2009, the metro network has expanded significantly, with the length of lines increasing from 52 kilometres to 90 kilometres, the number of stations increasing from 10 to 53, and the number of trains operating increasing from 79 to 129.

The number of daily passengers also increased from 20,000 passengers on September 10, 2009, to 767,000 on September 3, 2024.

On some days, such as New Year’s Eve and major holidays, the metro can handle up to 900,000 passengers in a single day.

Moreover, the metro has created job opportunities for UAE nationals, with 228 nationals currently working for the metro operating company.

Dubai Metro is the longest driverless project

The metro has maintained its position as the world’s longest driverless metro project and a landmark project of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority, serving as the cornerstone of the emirate’s public transport system.

Dubai Metro has contributed to preserving the environment, reducing the financial impact of traffic congestion, reducing the demand for the use of private vehicles, and encouraging the shift towards public transportation.

Moreover, the Dubai Metro has fostered a cultural shift within society towards public transport, as people have begun to appreciate the benefits of a public transport system, such as mental and physical comfort, ease of movement, lower fuel expenses, and lower vehicle maintenance costs.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, Dubai Metro carried 113.063 million passengers in 2020. The number rose to 151.026 million in 2021, and in 2022 the metro set a record with 225.142 million passengers.

Growth continued in 2023 to reach 260.034 million passengers, while the number of passengers from the beginning of this year until the end of August (8 months) reached 175.46 million passengers.
