Abu Dhabi on Monday announced the removal of the 120km/h minimum speed limit on Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road, a key motorway connecting the capital with Dubai.
Abu Dhabi Mobility, the emirate’s transport authority, said the decision aims to enhance road safety and facilitate smoother movement for heavy vehicles along the E311 route.
The minimum speed requirement had applied to drivers in the first and second lanes from the left since April 2023. Motorists failing to comply faced a Dh400 fine starting in May of that year.
At the time, the third and final lane—designated for heavy vehicles—was exempt from the minimum speed restriction, according to Abu Dhabi Police.
The road’s maximum speed limit of 140kph remains in place.
“As part of ongoing efforts to improve traffic safety and ease the movement of heavy vehicles, the minimum speed limit on Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Road (E311) has been removed,” Abu Dhabi Mobility announced on social media. “The decision is expected to enhance traffic flow and create a safer driving environment for all road users.”
Abu Dhabi Police had previously stated that the introduction of the minimum speed rule aimed to prevent slow driving in the fast lanes and reduce instances of tailgating, which can lead to serious accidents.
