According to Arab News, the Kuwait government has enacted a new law on citizenship, causing migrants in Kuwait to face difficulties regarding the citizenship of 40,000 people. Indeed a Kuwait official has revealed that around 40,000 migrants in Kuwait have lost the validity of their residency permits in Kuwait.
Hamad Rashid Al-Tawala, director of Residency Affairs of Kuwait, said that about 40,000 residency permits were not renewed.
Hamid Rashid Al Tawala, the head of Kuwait’s general administration department, cited orders from Interior Minister Anees Al Saleh, saying the decision was made to facilitate measures to renew residency permits.
He said that around 68,000 migrants’ passports expired during this period, mostly Egyptians and Indians. He stated that “this crisis has been addressed by allowing renewal of residency permits and transfer on the condition that the embassies of the respective countries affirm this approval in renewal and expats receive official written approval from the Kuwaiti Foreign Ministry” , “After this, further work will be done under the decisions taken between the two countries.
Department head Hameed Rashid Al Tawala stated, “This approach reflects sympathy with these expats who have made no mistake.” Their problem was the result of a coronovirus epidemic, ”he said, adding that about 7,000 migrant workers, mostly Egyptians and Indians, had scrapped their residence permits in Kuwait, which would be decided after further meeting. .
