ABU DHABI LATEST NEWS: The Integrated Transport Center (ITC) of the Department of Municipalities and Transport, in a clarification issued through its social media platforms, added that scooters with seats are also not classified as ‘light vehicles’.
Abu Dhabi’s transport regulator has said that electric bikes with engines running at 700 watts cannot be ridden without a permit.
‘Light vehicles’ can be used without a specific rider permit. Instead, users can use these lighter vehicles – including bikes, scooters without seats and low-powered electric bikes – on internal roads, and while using appropriate personal protective gear.
The ITC also specified the requirements for scooters and bikes:
- The height of the vehicle should not exceed 165 cms.
- The weight of the vehicle should be 35 kg or less.
- The width of the vehicle should be 70 cm or less.
ITC publishes new rules regarding use of light vehicles
- Do not ride bicycles and scooters against the direction of traffic flow.
- Avoid riding a bicycle or scooter on a road where the maximum speed limit is more than 60 kmph.
- Do not ride a bicycle or scooter in areas designated for walking and running, including walking and running.
- Never hold onto another moving vehicle while riding a bicycle or scooter.
Don’t take pillion riders. - Always wear a protective helmet, and wear reflective clothing when riding in dark areas.
The ITC issues fines of between Dh200 and Dh500 for violating these light vehicle use rules.
