Google made it clear on Friday that the popular e-mail service Gmail is not being shut down. This reply from Google came after this rumor was spread on social media platforms, in which it was being said that Gmail would be closed by the end of this year.

A fake screenshot had gone viral on social media platforms, in which it is seen that Gmail users have been e-mailed by Google that Gmail will be closed on August 1. It has also been claimed in this e-mail that after August, there will be no support for sending, receiving and storing e-mails in Gmail.

The screenshot going viral reads, ‘After years of connecting millions of people around the world, enabling seamless communication and fostering countless connections, Gmail’s journey is coming to an end. Starting August 1, 2024, Gmail will officially shut down, ending its service. This means that Gmail will no longer support sending, receiving or storing emails.

The company made it clear

This fake screenshot has been shared thousands of times on X (formerly Twitter) and TikTok. It is being claimed that this step has been taken by Google after facing criticism over its AI image tool Gemini. This image tool came into controversy this week after generating racially offensive images of Nazi soldiers. After this, Gmail wrote from its official handle on X that Gmail is not shutting down yet. In this way the company put a stop to the spreading rumours.

Tech experts clarified on the rumors spreading through social media that the company is going to close the HTML version of Gmail this year and not the entire e-mail service. Tech educator Marsha Collier has written that Gmail has discontinued the HTML-only version of its service from January 2024. Standard gmail is working fine. The HTML version of Gmail was used to access e-mail in low network areas.
