Kuwait debates ecological impact of COVID-19
Cairo: The aftermaths of the COVID-19 pandemic have gone beyond people’s health and economy. A prominent Kuwaiti environmentalist has said that the environment has taken a hit as well because of the virus.
Wajdan Al Eqabi, the chairwman of the Kuwait Environmental Protection Society said “We are now facing the problem of the accumulation of plastic waste and failure of some people to dispose of them in their designated places, a matter that in turn helps spread the virus.”
However, Wajdan said there is an opportunity at hand to encourage the production units and manufacturers of environmentally sustainable products and ban the use of disposable plastic items.
She added that many participants in the webinar said we cannot ignore many benefits to the environment due to the COVID-19 pandemic, including a reduction in carbon dioxide in environment.
She said that carbon dioxide in several countries has decreased by around 25 to 50 per cent, rates the UN has pushed for several years at its climate change meetings and conferences.
Experts from Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Egypt, Canada, Algeria and Libya participated in the webinar.
