Kuwait seeks to strengthen its position in the energy sector by increasing its refining capacity and investing in organic fuels as a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels.

Kuwaiti Oil Minister Imad Al-Ateeqi announced that Kuwait’s total refining capacity currently amounts to 1.83 million barrels per day, distributed between internal and external refineries.

The internal refineries, namely Al-Ahmadi, Mina Abdullah and Al-Zour, contribute with a capacity of 1.415 million barrels per day, while the remaining amount comes from Kuwait’s shares in the Duqm refineries in the Sultanate of Oman, Nghe Son in Vietnam, and Milazzo in Italy.

In a related context, the Kuwait Petroleum International Company, Italy branch, announced last March the signing of an agreement to purchase a 50% stake in the Italian company Ecofox, which specializes in manufacturing organic fuels.

This step comes within the framework of the country’s efforts to reduce carbon emissions from fossil fuels and shift towards more sustainable energy sources.

The Ministry of Oil described this deal as a “pioneering step” towards the development, production and distribution of sustainable organic fuels, in line with the goals of reducing carbon emissions in the transportation sector.
