Microsoft’s cooperation with the UAE’s G42 could involve exporting important components of artificial intelligence technology to the UAE

said the head Microsoft, Brad Smith, said the technology company’s high-profile deal with the UAE-backed artificial intelligence company“G42”G42 may eventually include moving advanced chips and tools, a move a senior Republican congressman has warned could have national security implications, it has been revealed. Reuters “today.

In an interview with Reuters this week, Smith said the sales agreement could advance to a second phase that would involve exporting important components of AI technology such as model weights, the crown jewel of AI systems that determine how robust they are. Smith said there is no specific timeline for phase two.

Going forward, the deal will require approval from the US Department of Commerce. Microsoft executives said that the agreement includes guarantees to protect Microsoft technology and prevent its use by Chinese entities to train artificial intelligence systems.

US officials have said that exporting AI systems could pose national security risks, for example by facilitating the engineering of chemical, biological and nuclear weapons. Last October, the administration of US President Joe Biden asked the makers of the largest artificial intelligence systems to share details related to them with the US government.

At present, for example, there is no regulation restricting the export of AI models, although bipartisan lawmakers this week introduced legislation that would give US officials clearer authority to do so.
