After a 25-year hiatus, the Iraqi government has successfully operated the 320-megawatt Dibis power plant, confirming its commitment to developing the energy sector.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani inaugurated a new power plant in Kirkuk Governorate on Thursday.320 MW capacity.

This project comes as part of the government’s efforts to enhance Stability of the national electricity system And improve the country’s energy supply.

Restarting a project that has been stalled for 25 years

The Dibs gas power plant in Kirkuk was inaugurated via video conference in the presence of the Prime Minister, who confirmed that Iraq is working on developing an economic model for the production of electricity. He pointed to the completion of many distribution stations and stalled projects, according to what was reported by the Iraqi News Agency.

For his part, Minister of Electricity, Ziad Fadel, explained that the Dibs station was implemented in record time after a 25-year hiatus. The project consists of two generating units and operates on three types of fuel.

The project was initially contracted with the Russian company Power Machine in 2000, but the contract ended without an agreement in 2011, after no agreement was reached with the company.

New contract and resumption of work on the project

Work on the project resumed during Al-Sudani’s government, as a contract was signed with a local company in 2022. The Northern Electricity Company and the specialized company began work in 2023, resulting in the two generating units being put into operation with a total capacity of 320 megawatts.

Strengthening the Iraqi National Electricity Grid

This project is expected to contribute to strengthening the Iraqi national electricity grid, ensuring stable energy supplies and meeting the growing needs of citizens.
