A new project will soon help tourists to the UAE get health insurance as they apply for their visas, it was announced Monday. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) said the ‘health insurance for tourist visas’ is among its ‘transformative projects’.
Major-General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, director-general of the authority, said the project will help tourists get health insurance while applying for their visas online through the ICP website or app.
The project aims to offer health cover in emergency cases. It will automate the process of getting health insurance through an electronic platform that will “manage the pricing and issuance” of packages from all major insurance companies in the UAE.
Beneficial move
Ramzi Ghurani, Managing Partner at Petra Insurance Brokers, welcomed the move and said it would not only benefit the local healthcare system but the visitors, as well. “Having insurance cover for all travellers is an assurance that they will be covered for their hospitalisation in case of an unexpected medical emergency. This also ensures the government and private hospitals in the country that they don’t have to foot the bill for an emergency for visitors.”
He also added that it is important for visitors to check what this insurance would cover.
“This is especially great for those travellers who don’t know much about health insurance when travelling,” he said. “It is surprising how many people don’t know about it and don’t take insurance when travelling. However, those who are more aware should check what the insurance covers. People who would like a more comprehensive medical cover might need to top up with their own private insurance to make sure they are fully protected in the case of an emergency.”
Better experience for tourists
Others in the industry also welcomed the move, saying it will lead to “better experience” for tourists and cement UAE’s position as a top vacation destination.
“This is a progressive move that combines health insurance with tourist visa application,” said Akbar Moideen Thumbay, Vice President, Thumbay Healthcare. “For travellers, having health insurance is essential protection against unforeseen medical expenses, particularly for emergency medical care. Travellers to the UAE will be able to enjoy their stay with the support of this service, knowing that their health and safety are given priority from the moment they apply for their visa. The visitors will always have quick access to high-quality medical care in the event of an emergency.”
He said this new initiative is also beneficial to tourists as they would get more competitive prices. “Once the automated health insurance procedure has been implemented, this would allow visitors to choose among insurance providers that give competitive coverage alternatives. This would ensure that their various demands as travellers will be satisfied.”
“As a result, tourists will have a better overall experience, and the UAE’s standing as a top vacation destination that puts safety and wellbeing first will be further strengthened,” he added.
