UAE accounts for 46.2% of Japan’s total oil imports

The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar accounted for most of Japan’s Arab oil exports. The share of Arab countries, led by the UAE, in Japan’s oil imports last May amounted to about 62.44 million barrels, or about 95.3% of the total oil that Japan imported that month.

The UAE is the largest oil supplier to Japan in May

Abu Dhabi ranked as the largest oil supplier to Japan, contributing 46.2% of total oil imports, according to Agency of Natural Resources and Energy.

While Kuwait and Qatar exported to Japan about 5.44 million barrels and 2.73 million barrels, representing 8.3% and 4.2% of Japan’s total imports, respectively.

The remaining 4.7% of imports were sourced from a range of countries, including the United States at 3.2%, Central and South America at 0.9%, Southeast Asia at 0.4%, and Oceania at 0.2%.

Japan’s increasing dependence on crude oil from the Middle East

Japan’s dependence on crude oil from the Middle East increased by one percentage point to 95.1% in 2023, data from the Japanese Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry showed.

In total, Japan imported 2.5 million barrels per day in 2023, a 7% decrease from 2022, with the share risingRiyadh, and Abu Dhabi, to 40.4% and 39% from 38.1% and 37.9% respectively.

While the share of oil imports from Russia fell further to just 0.1% of Japan’s total crude oil imports, down from 1.3% in 2022 and 4% in 2021.
