Did you know that the Chinese were the very first international traders to the Philippines, some 1,000 years ago? In the process, they introduced the local population to such delights as soy sauce, fish sauce and stir frying
Saturday 25th January 2020 marks the start of the Chinese New Year (Year of the Metal Rat). To mark the occasion, the multi-award-winning, Kensington-based Romulo Café & Restaurant is launching a special two week long Filipino-Chinese menu in addition to its regular Filipino menu.
Filipino cuisine is, after all, a true melting pot of flavours, each dish influenced by neighbouring countries and cultural occupation.
Indeed, Romulo Café & Restaurant is celebrating Chinese New Year with some extraordinary dishes from South China which, over the centuries, have become an indispensable part of Filipinos’ lives.
Created by Romulo’s brilliant head chef, Jeremy Villanueva, and available from 25th January until 8th February are delicacies such as Fried Vegetable Lumpia, stir-fried palm hearts, bean sprouts, potatoes, carrots and turnips in a spring roll wrapper served with sweet and sour sauce. Or how about some irresistible fish balls with infused cane vinegar and sweet soy sauce or Sio Mai, delicate steamed dumplings filled with minced pork and shrimp, carrots, dried mushrooms and green onions and then flavoured with soy sauce?
This quintet of savoury delicacies is complemented by a moreish dessert in the shape of Coconut Tapioca, a light and refreshing concoction created with coconut milk and tapioca pearls topped with caramelised plantain.
Choose to celebrate with the option of a sharing menu with unlimited green tea for only £25 per person or a la carte, mixing and matching these fabulous newcomers with dishes on Romulo’s main menu.
