China warned
Significantly, before the City Council bill was passed, Beijing had warned Tokyo of any change in the island chain. In China’s official newspaper Global Times, Japan was also told to stay in the limits. Beijing advised Japan to avoid any changes or new changes on Diaoyu Island and asked it to take practical action to maintain stability in the East China Sea. Apart from this, Beijing also asked Japan to follow the spirit of ‘Four-Principle Consent’. On the other hand, the City Council of Japan said that this bill is necessary to improve the efficiency of administrative procedures.
Controversy over the island of East China Sea
Japan and China have been in dispute over the past years over several islands in the East China Sea. On one hand, Japan calls it Senkakus, on the other hand China calls it Diaoyus. Japan has been in occupation since 1972. At the same time, China says that these islands come under its jurisdiction. Japan should drop its claim. Not only this, China has already boasted of military action for this.
Sino-Japanese relations have been tense since 2012, when Japan nationalized some islands. After this, China refused high level talks with Japan. It is worth noting that the Japanese Navy currently guards the Senkaku or Diaos islands. In such a situation, if China claims it, then it will have to fight war with Japan.
