NHL plots 24-team playoffs in 2 cities on return

New York: On Tuesday, the NHL announced it will discard the rest of the regular season and head straight to a conference-based playoff with 24 teams competing in two hub cities.

“We believe we have prepared an overall plan that will present a worthy Stanley Cup champion,” Gary Bettman, the Commissioner said.

Bettman however did not provide specific dates for a return to play. Also added the two hub cities would be picked at a later date.

He confirmed training camps would not open until July 1, and in early June, small groups of players will be able to resume working out at the training facilities.

The NHL season has been on halt since March 12 due to the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic, and all players are currently under league-mandated quarantine.
