If you flew into DXB during Ramadan and thought you saw a dinner table on the runway as your plane landed then we have wonderful news – your eyes weren’t playing tricks on you. Staff at the world’s busiest airport were treated to an iftar on the tarmac as planes flew overhead.
The unusual setting for an iftar saw people from different cultural backgrounds come together to share traditional Middle Eastern Ramadan fare. Diners broke the fast with dates, fruits, sweets and refreshing beverages after the sun set over the airport.
The elegant table was sturdy enough to stay in one place as planes came and went overhead at the airport. Majed Al Joker, Chief Operating Officer of Dubai Airports, said the unusual iftar embodied the spirit of Ramadan.

“By creating this inclusive event, we celebrate the values of empathy, compassion, and unity that resonate across all communities, fostering a stronger sense of camaraderie and mutual respect among our team members.”
During Ramadan, Dubai’s own Emirates airline is distributing iftar boxes on flights and at departure gates. The captain assists passengers in calculating the correct time to break the fast as the sunrise and sunset timings are a bit trickier to figure out while in transit.
