Jaishankar tweeted, “Glad to welcome Dr. Anwar Gargash, Diplomatic Advisor to the President of UAE. This underlines the rapid progress in our relationship. Regional concerns of mutual interest were discussed.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday held talks with Anwar Gargash, diplomatic advisor to United Arab Emirates (UAE) President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, focused on “regional concerns” of mutual interest. Jaishankar and Gargash are believed to have discussed the Afghanistan crisis apart from the overall situation in the Gulf region.

Jaishankar tweeted, “Glad to welcome Dr. Anwar Gargash, Diplomatic Advisor to the President of UAE. This underlines the rapid progress in our relationship. Regional concerns of mutual interest were discussed.

The visit of a senior UAE diplomat to India comes at a time when events are changing rapidly in Afghanistan after the Taliban’s capture of Kabul. The Taliban captured Kabul on August 15, and hours after that, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani left the country. Four days later, Ghani appeared in the United Arab Emirates.

Senior Taliban leader Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanekzai said on Saturday that his organization wants to maintain Afghanistan’s business, economic and political ties with India. He said that India is an important country in the region.

Stanekzai said, “We are connected with India through our business, economic and political ties and we want to maintain that.” India is currently working on a wait-and-see policy. He is seeing whether the new government of Afghanistan is only of the Taliban or is there a power-sharing agreement with other Afghan leaders.
