The COVID19 pandemic has had an unprecedent impact on the global economy. Across the world, unemployment has reached record levels and consumer confidence has fallen to all time lows. You might think that this is the worst time to pursue post-graduate education, but that would be allowing fear, uncertainty, and doubt to keep you from doing what is likely the most important thing you can do to protect yourself financially, now and into the future.

Many people fear that they may lose their jobs during this time of economic downturn, which is a legitimate concern. However, it must be considered that an employer deciding who on the team to downsize would more favourably consider retaining someone who is investing their personal time and money to upskill and thus become more valuable to the company than someone who simply has a bachelor’s degree and is making no attempt at improving themselves. It must be remembered that from the moment you enrol in your post-graduate degree, you can put that information on your CV and inform your management. In doing so, you are not only demonstrating to your management that you are willing to put in the time and money to upskill yourself but that you are confident of your continued employment; which to a manager is a sign of someone with the right attitude.

However, let us assume that the company has no choice about making your position redundant or that the company is forced to close down. When moving into the job market, who do you think would be more likely to be hired, someone who is investing their own time and money upskilling themselves through a Master’s degree or someone who has secured their bachelor’s degree and done nothing further. Of course, hiring managers will look more favourable upon someone who is showing drive and initiative and who is demonstrating that they are willing to invest in themselves. It is well known that companies are much more likely to invest in a person who invest in themselves.

Investing in post-graduate education at this time, makes you less likely to be made redundant and more likely to find subsequent employment if you are let go. In either case, it is a win.

Since the post-graduate degrees offered at Curtin University Dubai can be completed in as little as 12 months fulltime, as the economy improves over the next few years, you will be a Master’s degree holder as the job market is opening up. It must be remembered that roughly only 1% of the world’s population holds a Master’s degree, so by completing your Master’s at Curtin Dubai, you will have joined the top 1% of the most educated people in the world.

Having your Master’s degree will then position you to be promoted into a higher position when companies return to growth and to even move to another company in a higher position. The fact that you had the courage and determination to complete your Master’s during all of the challenges of the pandemic will show your employer and your future employers that you do not panic in times of crisis and instead make wise decisions considering what will produce the best results in the medium and long term.

When considering where to pursue your Master’s degree, it is very important to consider the ranking of the university and any external accreditations that the program holds. For the vast majority of people who pursue post-graduate studies, the Master’s degree will be the highest degree they pursue and will therefore be at the top of their CV. It is therefore important that this final degree be from a highly reputed university.

Curtin University is ranked in the top 1% of all universities in the world by the Academic Ranking of World Universities. Curtin’s Business School is also accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) which is a professional recognition awarded only to the top business schools in the world.
