Moroccan King Sets Priorities for Southern Regions After UN Mission Ends

On 4 November 2026, King Mohammed VI convened a high‑level session at the Royal Palace in Rabat to review actions required after the United Nations MINURSO mission ended, following the Security Council’s decision not to renew its mandate.

The gathering, attended by Prime Minister Fatima Zahra Al‑Mansouri, senior royal adviser Fouad Ali Al‑Hima, Interior Minister Abdel‑Wafi Lafitte, and senior military officials including Major‑General Mohamed Briaz, focused on safeguarding Morocco’s territorial unity, national security and the peace of mind of citizens living in the southern provinces.

The king reiterated the priorities outlined in the royal communiqué of 30 October, emphasizing respect for Morocco’s borders, protection of national security and assurance of safety for southern inhabitants.

He issued firm directives for each relevant authority to implement these priorities, aiming to strengthen national consensus and keep the southern development agenda on track.

King Mohammed VI also confirmed Morocco’s unwavering commitment to the cease‑fire, stating that the decision is a matter of will and will not be altered by the end of the UN mission’s term.

He noted that MINURSO had repeatedly failed to monitor compliance with the cease‑fire or address violations, and that the mission’s original mandate no longer matches the evolving situation and international actors’ positions.

In the post‑mission phase, the king tasked the “Office of Coordination with MINURSO” within the Interior Ministry to manage the drawdown and withdrawal procedures, ensuring a smooth and orderly process.

The monarch stressed Morocco’s respect for its international obligations and its diplomatic approach aimed at preserving peace while protecting sovereign interests.

He highlighted recent diplomatic gains, citing recognition from several friendly and fraternal states of Morocco’s sovereignty over its desert territories and reaffirming the autonomy initiative as the sole political solution to the regional dispute.
