Saudi Arabia plans to set maximum limit for household vehicles

Saudi Arabia’s Public Transport Authority has received instructions from higher authorities early this year on its mandate to set a maximum limit for the ownership of private vehicles, Al Watan learned.
This comes at a time when the new traffic system and its executive regulations have not specified a maximum number of vehicles that a citizen has the right to own, while the system stipulated that a resident is entitled to register only two vehicles, the newspaper reported.
Environmental Household Survey 2019, carried out by the General Authority for Statistics, showed the average number of cars owned by families across the Kingdom is about 1.38 car per household.
The latest official statistics estimate that the number of vehicles in the Kingdom exceeds 12 million vehicles, and that the growth rate of the vehicles reaches nearly 5 per centannually.
Statistics showed the transportation sector consumes about 22 per cent of the total primary energy of the consumer, 80% of it is consumed by road transport.
The light vehicles account for about 80 per cent of the total number of vehicles in the Kingdom, which is expected to reach 25 million vehicles by 2030.
