Enjoy company Aramco Saudi Arabia With the lowest levels of fresh water consumption per barrel compared to other oil and gas production companies in the world.

The company continues to invest in maintaining this premium image, and currently has more than 1,800 test points to monitor groundwater quality at 63 of its facilities.

This came during Aramco’s participation in the third edition of Saudi Water Forum, which was held in the capital, Riyadh. This important event is organized by the Ministry of Environment, Water and Agriculture, with the aim of enhancing water security and achieving water sustainability, in addition to enhancing opportunities for cooperation and building partnerships in this vital field.

Aramco’s participation in the forum witnessed the presence of the Supreme Vice President of Engineering Services, Khalid bin Yahya Al-Qahtani, who joined a number of international experts and leaders of official agencies. The forum sessions focused on examining ways to confront the challenges facing the water sector in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

In his speech during the conference, Al-Qahtani stressed Aramco’s commitment to protecting the environment and water, referring to the policies the company has followed since 1963.

Al-Qahtani highlighted the role of the seawater treatment plant in the village, which is considered the largest plant in the world for maintaining reservoir pressure, which contributed to saving more than 160 billion gallons of groundwater annually.

Al-Qahtani also pointed to Aramco’s efforts in the field of water treatment and use, as the company reuses about 70% of wastewater in residential neighborhoods for useful purposes, such as irrigation and cooling towers. Aramco also cooperates with the National Water Company to provide treated water to the Riyadh Refinery and use it in various manufacturing processes and crude oil refining.

Regarding technologies, Al-Qahtani emphasized Aramco’s efforts in the field of research and development of water conservation technologies, including the development of smart reverse osmosis and water-saving irrigation technologies. The company’s most notable successes are in this field, as it won the Best Water Management Technology Award in 2022 through the technology of stopping liquid drainage.

Al-Qahtani said: “Saudi Aramco’s effort to protect the environment dates back to 1963, when the company began by launching an environmental protection policy, followed by establishing a water conservation policy.

As a result, the seawater treatment plant was established in the village, which became the largest plant in the world for maintaining reservoir pressure, and the company’s efforts contributed to saving more than 160 billion gallons of groundwater annually to support underground reservoir injection operations.

Within the framework of a cooperation agreement with Saudi Aramco, the National Water Company supplies the Riyadh Refinery with approximately 3.8 million gallons per day of treated water at its “Heat” station, where it is reused in various manufacturing processes and refining crude oil at the refinery.”

Regarding the technologies used by Saudi Aramco in the field of water, Al-Qahtani explained: “Saudi Aramco is making tangible efforts in the field of research and development to develop water conservation technologies in cooperation with academics and technical innovators from the global elite.

These efforts include developing advanced technologies in several fields, including smart reverse osmosis technology for water desalination, effective irrigation techniques to save water, and solutions for detecting and repairing leaks in the company’s various facilities. We aim to be leaders in digital transformation, having created a state-of-the-art 4IR hub that collects more than 25 million data points daily. Saudi Aramco engineers leverage that data with the help of artificial intelligence and big data analysis to manage produced water in oil wells efficiently and effectively.”
