Filipina expat in UAE terminated by employer for asking for help from Gulf News readers

Dubai: A Filipina expat was terminated by her employer after her story asking for help from readers of Gulf news to pay for house rent and to buy food during the coronavirus pandemic was recently published.

On May 14, the story of Corazon Tarcena aged 54, went online. Many readers also offered help and she managed to get enough money to pay her landlord and buy essentials like food items. But after three days, when she returned to work, she was handed a termination letter by her employer because of the story that went online on the news site.

The general manager of the company, where Tarcena worked for about 12 years, the letter which was handed over to her said her employment has ended on that day.

Illegal termination

Barney Almazar, a license holder of UAE legal consultancy and director at the corporate-commercial department of Gulf Law, said the Tarcena’s termination was completely illegal. The employer didn’t give any prior warning and the publication of her story on the news site was not a ground for termination.
