UAE Weather Authority: 96% Chance El Niño Persists Through March 2027
NCM says El Niño likely to continue until March 2027 with 3.8°C temperature anomaly, but clarifies this doesn’t guarantee heavy rainfall for the Emirates.
The National Centre of Meteorology confirms a 96% probability that El Niño conditions will persist from November 2026 through March 2027. However, the agency emphasizes this climate pattern does not automatically mean heavier rain for the UAE.

The National Centre of Meteorology has confirmed a 96 per cent probability that El Niño conditions will continue from November 2026 through March 2027, with sea surface temperatures in the Pacific potentially climbing 3.8°C above normal levels. The announcement came through the centre’s official channels on 31 October 2026, citing the latest projections from the World Meteorological Organisation.
El Niño is a naturally occurring climate pattern that typically emerges every two to seven years. It develops when ocean temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific rise above their historical averages. The phenomenon is not a storm system or hurricane, but rather a shift in ocean-atmosphere dynamics that can influence weather patterns across the globe. For the Arabian Gulf region, the effects tend to be indirect.
The centre was careful to manage expectations.
According to the NCM, the 96 per cent figure reflects the likelihood of El Niño persisting through the specified period, not the probability of increased precipitation over the Emirates. Seasonal models suggest temperatures and rainfall across the UAE may remain near or slightly above their typical averages during these months. The agency noted that El Niño influences wind patterns and the movement of low-pressure systems, which can in turn affect regional weather, but the relationship is complex and not deterministic.
Forecasts indicate the phenomenon could maintain exceptional strength between November 2026 and January 2027, with potential effects lingering into April. The NCM stressed that intensity alone does not translate to heavy rain for the country. Residents should monitor regular weather updates rather than rely on seasonal climate signals for day-to-day planning.
Weather patterns across the Gulf have shown increased variability in recent years. The NCM continues to track both global climate drivers and local atmospheric conditions to provide accurate short-term forecasts alongside these longer-range outlooks.
