in China’s diplomatic cooperation in 2006, with Health Director Margaret Chan in Hong Kong leaving behind 12 candidates to become the Director General of WHO. In 2012, Chan was again elected unopposed. The other participants then understood that this election is not possible without the support of China. Five years later in 2017, China’s influence was not seen and Ethiopia’s Health Minister Tedros Adenom Ghebreyes became the head of the WHO with the support of African countries. But Tedros also sought cooperation and support from Beijing. Instead, on the very day of the WHO victory, Tedros supported China on the ‘One China’ policy. This is an indication WHO would not invite Taiwan without the consent of China. In July 2018, Tedros met with Chinese officials in Beijing to discuss how the organization could be strengthened further.

But if the US leaves the organization, the WHO will turn to China for leadership and support. While the US has announced to reduce the WHO budget, China has provided $ 30 million to the WHO to deal with Corona.
