What are the sponsorship options for domestic workers in the UAE?

Can a domestic worker in the UAE work on his or her own visa? This was a question raised by a Gulf News reader.

A reader asked: “I am working as a housekeeper in the UAE and will soon be finishing my contract. Can I apply for my own work visa for a domestic worker without a sponsor? If yes, how much does it cost?”

MOHRE clarified that an individual cannot have a work visa in the UAE without having a sponsor.

Domestic workers in the UAE can be sponsored by families, through cleaning and domestic worker’s service providers or through Tadbeer centres.

So, as an individual interested in working as a domestic worker, you would need to be sponsored either by a family, by a licensed company or a Tadbeer centre.

If a family wishes to sponsor a domestic worker, they can do so by taking the following documents to a typing centre:

a. Ejari / Title Deed / Tenancy for a two bedroom apartment, with maid's room or a three bedroom apartment. Requirements can change, so speak to your typing centre to find out what the minimum requirements are.

b. Salary certificate, showing a minimum salary of Dh25,000. c. Marriage Certificate and spouse passport and visa copy. d. Passport and residence visa copy if the sponsor is an expatriate.

e. Original Emirates ID f. Domestic worker's passport copy g. Domestic worker's coloured photo (Two photographs with a white background)

g. If the maid or nanny is a national of the same country, you need to get a certificate from the country’s consulate proving you are not related.
