Health authorities in Madrid may extend to more communities the restrictions on movement it imposed on areas of the Spanish capital with high coronavirus infection rates.

The region’s deputy health chief, Antonio Zapatero, said on Wednesday that a decision on additional measures, including possible customer limits in restaurants, would be announced on Friday.

Mr Zapatero said the outbreak in the Madrid region, which has a population of 6.6 million, was one of “sustained increase”.

Madrid had an infection rate of 772 cases per 100,000 people in 14 days, nearly three times Spain’s national average of 287 cases per 100,000 people.

Other parts of the country are also seeing increases in new cases. Spain recorded 241 more virus-related deaths on Tuesday, bringing the death toll to 30,904.

The decision comes as Oman registered 10 new Covid-19 deaths and 568 new cases in the country.

“The UAE is sparing no effort to ensure the safety and well-being of all its people and Ras Al Khaimah is part of the country’s drive to be at the forefront of the global response to this pandemic,” said Sheikh Saud bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Ruler of Ras Al Khaimah.
