Dubai: United Arab Emirates now wants to make Al Maktoum International Airport the largest airport in the world. It is also known as Dubai World Central (DWC).

UAE has announced this mega plan. This airport was started in 2013. According to CNN report, government agencies aim to use innovative technology and redesign the airport to increase its capacity. It has a capacity of 10 crore passengers every year. Officials now want to increase its capacity to two crore passengers.

Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths revealed that he wants to increase investment in it for customer facilities. He said the passenger forecast for 2024 is expected to reach 8.82 crore and 9.38 crore by 2025. He has not given any exact time regarding the development of the airport. But in 2023, Griffith told AFP that when capacity is reached, we will need a new airport. This could happen in the 2030s.

Passengers will get convenience

Once the airport project is completed, a big economic center will be created nearby. Griffith had said in a conversation with a magazine that we will not build the world’s largest airport with new terminals. Rather, we will revolutionize the airport business. We will provide such facilities to the passengers so that they do not take much time. The airport will be the centerpiece of a larger plan called Dubai South. It envisages the construction of an entire new city on 145 square km of desert south of Dubai.

Cargo traffic increased

Dubai World Central has seen a large increase in cargo traffic in the last quarter of 2023. This increase is about 20 percent. The main reason behind this increase is the increasing attacks in the Red Sea by Yemen’s Houthi rebels. Yemen’s Houthi rebels have been attacking Israel and its allies. In January 2022, the Houthis launched a drone and missile attack on UAE critical infrastructure, killing three oil workers. There was a fire at the under construction airport in Abu Dhabi.
