On the same day on 14 July last year, host England managed to become world champions for the first time on the historic grounds of Lord’s. The World Cup-2019 final match between England and New Zealand ended in a tie and after that the ‘Super Over’ was also tied. Later, the decision to win and lose was made on the basis of setting the maximum boundary during the match. On this scale, England’s team prevailed over New Zealand.

Indeed, because of the boundary rules, England managed to capture the World Cup, while the New Zealand team, which performed brilliantly, missed the title. After this, questions were raised on the ICC rules. Finally, after three months (October 2018), the ICC lifted this rule. That is, now no team can become a winner on the basis of boundary count.

The ICC made it clear that if there is a super over tie in the group stage, then the match will remain a tie. On the other hand, in the semi-finals and final matches, the super over will continue till one team scores more runs than the other team.

What happened in the final match

On 14 July, in the final match played at the historic Lord’s ground, New Zealand scored 241 runs while batting first. England needed 242 runs to become World Champion, but the hosting team also managed to score 241 runs in 50 overs and the match was tied.

To get the result of this tie match, a super over was made, in which England scored 15 runs and later New Zealand was also able to score 15 runs. So the match was also tied here. The result of the match came out on the basis of which team got more boundary in the match.

England had put a total of 26 boundaries during their innings in the entire match, while New Zealand had 17 boundaries in its account. The boundary imposed in the super over was also counted. England were declared winners on this basis, but the ICC has now repealed the boundary count rule.

Biggest turning point of the match

The biggest turning point in this match was to be over-thrown with the bat of Ben Stokes in the last over. In the last over when England needed 9 runs off 3 balls, Ben Stokes ran for two runs, playing a full toss ball from Trent Boult towards deep midwicket, but Martin Guptill was thrown to the striker end of the throw. After hitting the bat, he went out of the boundary for overthrow and England got six runs on this ball, the match was reversed here.

On-field umpire Kumar Dharmasena, who gave the controversial four in the final, has later admitted that it was his mistake to give England four in the World Cup final and should have given them one run. Dharmasena had told the Sri Lankan newspaper Sunday Times, ‘Now after watching the replay on TV, I accept that there was a mistake in taking the decision. But it was not easy to watch TV replays on the field and I would never regret my decision.

Criticism of an ICC rule started after England was declared the winner in Cricket World Cup 2019. Apart from celebrity on social media, common people also criticized the ICC rule. Many users wrote that the ICC should change this rule to declare the winner on the basis of boundary.
