Most schools in the country have been closed for about eight months due to the corona virus. Legionella bacteria that grow in them can be fatal to children and staff if they do not properly clean the bathrooms with water tanks, etc. after the school opens after a long time. It has been found in nine schools in the US.
Dr. Manodeep Sen, a bacteriologist in the Department of Microbiology of RML Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow, says that it is more likely to flourish in the water tanks, washrooms or fountains of the school. It is a matter of concern that this bacterium can catch people spreading like corona virus right now. So that they can be confirmed only by special culture to identify infection if they do not suffer.
Bacteria can enter the body with water
Dr. Manodeep explains that Legionella are bacteria that cause respiratory problems. As soon as the water tap or sower is turned on. The bacteria sitting inside will enter the body with water. The immunity of older children and adults may be more adversely affected. However, there is less risk for young children.
America’s school has zero chlorine level
When the exercise to open schools started in the US, some schools tested water twice at Milton Union High School, and chlorine levels were found to be zero. After this, the school management conducted a detailed examination of the water, and confirmed the presence of Legionella bacteria in it. Scientists say that water containing bacteria is difficult to detect without investigation. In such a situation, caution is necessary.
This can be avoided –
- If children come to school, then take drinking water from home.
- Wear a mask while coming to the toilet convoy.
- School administration should take care of cleaning the toilets.
- Tanks and water sources should not be commissioned without proper cleaning.
- No one should be allowed to go to such places in the campus where water is stored or supply from there.
