The world celebrates World Humanitarian Day on August 19, and the world remembers with reverence the humanitarian workers who were killed or injured in the course of their work. We pay tribute to all the relief and health workers who continue to support the people most in need, despite all the challenges and difficulties.
This year, the International Humanitarian Day comes with the continuation of global efforts to combat the “Covid 19” pandemic over the past few months. Aid workers are overcoming unprecedented obstacles and challenges in reaching people in 54 countries and helping them during humanitarian crises, as well as nine countries that the pandemic has placed in need.
The UAE has also designated a day to celebrate the “Zayed Day for Humanitarian Action” which falls on Ramadan 19, which coincides with the anniversary of the departure of the late founder Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, “may God rest his soul.”

Zayed’s Day

The “Zayed Humanitarian Work Day” is a milestone in the history of the country, and an occasion to celebrate the achievements of humanitarian work with the aid it provides to other countries and peoples. It is also an occasion to launch vital and qualitative humanitarian and charitable initiatives through hundreds of governmental and community activities organized by public, private and civil institutions.
History records for the late Sheikh Zayed that he succeeded in transforming humanitarian work in the UAE into a civilized way of life and behavior passed on to generations, by institutionalizing it and giving it the characteristic of inclusiveness, so that it is not limited to providing material assistance only, but extends to moving to areas of humanitarian crisis and direct interaction with Its problems.
The founding father elevated the value and presence of charitable work, turning it into one of the most important dimensions of the state’s foreign policy, which directs aid and assistance to all people. During his reign, the UAE also became one of the most important countries contributing to humanitarian and relief work, and today, thanks to his legacy, it occupies, for the sixth year in a row, first place in the world as the largest donor of foreign aid.

Relief issues

Humanitarian and charitable issues acquired an advanced position in Sheikh Zayed’s thought, whether inside or outside the country, and the amount of aid provided by the UAE, under his guidance, may God bless him, in the form of grants, loans and aid, covered most of the countries of the world more than 98 billion dirhams until late 2000.

Real heroes

A global campaign celebrates humanitarian workers, and a message of “thanks” to those who stood up to help others. On August 19 of this year, our celebration of International Humanitarian Day will be the eleventh annual celebration on this occasion, in which we celebrate the true heroes who stood up to help others in all parts of the world under the most difficult circumstances.
The campaign focuses on what drives humanitarian workers to continue their work in protecting and protecting themselves, despite the conflict and insecurity, the difficulty of reaching the needy and the risks they face in connection with the “Covid-19” pandemic.
And this year, the pandemic was the biggest challenge facing humanitarian operations around the world. Difficulty reaching people, as well as restrictions imposed by governments, have made local communities, civil society organizations and local NGOs at the forefront of responding to this pandemic.
Therefore, the campaign provides inspiring personal stories for humanitarian workers who provide treatment for the pandemic and make efforts to prevent it, as well as providing food for vulnerable people in need, providing safe places for women and girls during the economic lockdown, providing care services related to childbirth, and combating locusts. And the management of refugee camps in light of this pandemic.
According to a report issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation at the end of last December, the UAE continued in 2018 its support for the 17 sustainable development goals, disbursing more than 50% of the total aid amounting to 28.26 billion dirhams to support peace, justice, economic growth and poverty eradication initiatives.
The value of the commitments made by the UAE amounted to 10.33 billion dirhams, equivalent to 2.81 billion US dollars, in 2019, to support development and humanitarian aid in many countries, including 14 of the least developed countries.
These contributions came at an exceptional time to provide all forms of basic support such as cash and in-kind assistance, water, medicine and clean water to needy families that include orphans and women-headed homes, the elderly in Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon, Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh and Malian refugees in Mauritania.

Why August 19?

The date of August 19 was designated as International Humanitarian Day in memory of those who perished in the attack that occurred on August 19, 2003, on the Canal Hotel in the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, which killed 22 people, including the chief humanitarian affairs officer in Iraq, Sergio Vieira de Mello, and in 2009, the United Nations General Assembly formalized this anniversary, officially declaring World Humanitarian Day.
