Twitter fact-checks Trump tweet for the first time

San Francisco: Twitter for the first time urged readers to check the facts in tweets posted by US President Donald Trump, warning his claims about mail-in ballots were not true and had been debunked by fact checkers.

Responding the company’s action, Trump in a tweet accused the company of unnecessary intervention in the presidential election of 2020.

He said, “Free Speech cannot be restricted by Twitter, and I will not allow it to happen!” The blue exclamation mark notification urged readers to “check the facts about mail-in ballots” and pointed them to a page with news blogs and information about the claims accumulated by Twitter staffers.

Twitter said they applied a fact-checking label to tweet by the president for the first time. This is a part of an extension of its new “misleading information” policy introduced this earlier month to curb spreading of the misinformation about the coronavirus.

At the time of introducing this new policy, the company said that it would extend the policy on misleading information about COVID-19 to other topics in future.
