UAE schools to finish term curriculum before holy month

0

UAE schools are taking proactive steps in lesson planning and assessment as they prepare for the upcoming Ramadan month, which is expected to commence on March 12, subject to moon sighting variations.

To accommodate the fasting period for students, schools are adjusting their curriculum plans to reduce the focus on new critical learning objectives. Lisa Johnson, principal of the American Academy for Girls, emphasized the strategic mapping of the curriculum during Ramadan. Lessons are tailored to alleviate pressure on students while respecting the significance of the month. This approach aims to balance academic progress with cultural and religious values.

According to the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA), schools in Dubai would not allow more than five hours of instruction time during Ramadan. Schools that follow the Indian curriculum have made sure that the academic calendar coincides with Ramadan so that students may balance their religious and cultural obligations without letting it interfere with their studies.

Schools are focusing on completing curricular goals and summative assessments before the start of Ramadan. Amity School Dubai Principal, Sangita Chima, highlighted the careful adjustment of the curriculum pace according to the Islamic Lunar Calendar. This ensures that academic requirements are met before the holy month begins.

In order to accommodate students’ needs for more leeway during Ramadan, schools use altered schedules that do not include physical education, dancing, or music. When Ramadan rolls around, principals and teachers work together to assess the school year’s curriculum and make any required revisions.

Abhilasha Singh, Principal of Shining Star International, emphasized the importance of backward planning and reviewing the curriculum annually to align with Ramadan. Teachers prepare long-term plans and assess curriculum coverage during Ramadan, making accommodations as needed to ensure no essential topics are missed.

Overall, schools prioritize a balanced approach that honors the spiritual significance of Ramadan while maintaining academic progress and ensuring students’ well-being during this culturally significant period.
